Robbed from tourists: A thief was caught on Mallorca despite a clever disguise

Finding the proverbial needle in a haystack is difficult enough. However, it is almost impossible to discover a specific stalk among all the stalks. So if you want to hide or camouflage something particularly well, it’s best to place it in plain sight. Surrounded by a large crowd of their own kind. The best hiding place for a book? On a library shelf among thousands of other books. For a letter that you don’t want everyone to see? Lying open on the desk, in the middle of a neatly stacked stack of dozens, if not hundreds, of other documents.

If you don’t want to be discovered, it’s best to go into a crowd. And behave as much as possible like everyone else. In order not to attract attention as an individual on Mallorca, you either have to be a tourist – or pretend to be one. This is what a local did, with dark intentions: The man stole from vacationers in hotels, in restaurants, on the terraces of bars. This went unnoticed for a while, precisely because he did not appear in the form of a perpetrator, but rather in the form of one of the many actual or at least potential victims.

He walked openly among the tourists. And whenever they – relaxed on holiday and unsuspecting because they were among their own kind – thought their belongings were safe, he struck. Put in wallets, watches and jewelry. And soon had stolen things worth around 18,000 euros, as the Mallorca police reported. After she was finally able to arrest the man.

But how could this happen? After all, the guy was supposedly camouflaged in the best possible way. Isn’t the theory true that what is obvious is best hidden because it is not recognized as something hidden? Or was this thief simply too bad at pretending to be a tourist? Did he possibly underestimate the matter? Because there’s a lot of things that people don’t accuse tourists of: there are too many of them in one place, they’re too loud, they’re too stingy, their behavior is as bad as their taste, and they’re also often insensitive, impertinent, vulgar, arrogant, bossy, inconsiderate, egomaniacal. You have to get it all done first. This requires years of training and, ideally, early childhood imprinting from parents, who in turn are trained tourists.

And then tourists always don’t want to be recognized as tourists – including this one move You have to be good as a tourist impersonator in order not to fall out of character. This can only have been too much for this thieving Mallorcan. Perhaps little things gave him away due to a lack of intimate knowledge of the codes: a shirt button undone too much or too little, the sandals a bit too stylish, the pattern of the swimming shorts, on the other hand, already out in the holiday community. And so he came into the sights of the investigators, who at some point identified him, monitored him and finally caught him in the act. If things go badly for him, he has to do social work as punishment. Collecting trash on the beach, for example. No chance of concealment. Recognizable to everyone for who they are.
