A snow cloud rushes towards skiers in a deadly avalanche

A deadly avalanche hit the Val Veny area of ​​the Courmayeur ski resort in northwestern Italy on Sunday, killing two skiers and seriously injuring a third person. The three men were skiing off-piste at the “Kavlor Voss”, a popular freestyle skiing course, when a large avalanche rushed towards them and took them by surprise.

One of the surfers was killed on the spot, while a second surfer was rescued and rushed to a hospital in serious condition, where he died of his injuries. The third surfer, who suffered serious injuries, was taken to the “La Molinta” hospital in Turin, where he is in a serious but stable condition. The rescue forces were immediately called to the scene, and included 15 rescuers, three dog units and two helicopters. The identity of the victims has not been released so far, but the authorities are continuing their investigation.

The avalanche occurred against the backdrop of dangerous snow conditions across the Alps, after several days of heavy snow and strong winds. The Aosta Valley area, where Courmayeur is located, was under a high level avalanche risk warning at the time of the event, with a rating of 3 out of 5 on the avalanche danger scale. This rating indicates that the snow in the area is unstable, and the weight of one skier is enough to trigger an avalanche. “We have seen a record number of deaths following avalanches in Italy in recent days,” says Federico Catania, spokesman for Italian Alpine Rescue. “The situation remains critical, and surfers must exercise caution, especially in off-piste areas and on steep terrain.” The risk of avalanches remains high in the thousands, and experts continue to warn skiers and snowboarders to check local warning notices daily, avoid exposed areas and make sure they are updated on current conditions.
