Prolonged heavy rain punctured the roof of the terminal at Soekarno-Hatta International Airport, water poured down like a waterfall, causing panic among passengers and disrupting many flights.
The incident occurred on April 6 at Soekarno-Hatta International Airport in Jakarta after several days of torrential rain. Video from the scene showed that the roof was torn off, creating a large hole, causing a huge amount of water to pour straight into the waiting room area.
The strong flow of water overflowed the waiting rows and TV area. Part of the ceiling material was peeling off and hanging while the water continued to pour down. At the boarding gates, the water was up to their ankles, causing passengers to have to rush to find a place to stand.
Airport representatives said the incident took place for about 5 minutes. The incident caused 12 flights to be diverted and another 28 flights delayed.
“Airport operations staff immediately took action, including cleaning and sealing off the affected area. The situation was quickly controlled soon after,” an airport spokesperson shared with local media. Authorities confirmed that airport operations are still safe.
Soekarno-Hatta International Airport, located in Tangerang city, Jakarta metropolitan area, is the largest and busiest airport in Indonesia, and is among the busiest in Southeast Asia.

The project was put into operation in 1985, named after two important historical figures of Indonesia, first President Sukarno and Vice President Mohammad Hatta. The airport currently serves as the main international gateway to the capital Jakarta, connecting Indonesia with more than 60 destinations within and outside the region. Terminal T3 at the airport with a design capacity of 25 million passengers a year, was officially put into operation in 2016.
On the same day, in the UK, Birmingham airport also had to urgently evacuate the north terminal due to smoke in the baggage and immigration area. Many fire teams were dispatched to the scene. Some witnesses described the area as reeking of chemicals and smoke.
Passengers who landed at the airport were asked to remain seated on the plane to ensure safety while authorities inspected the scene.
