A plane catches fire and crashes – only the pilot survived
A passenger plane has crashed on take-off in Kathmandu, the capital of Nepal, with the pilot rescued from the burning wreckage but all 18 other passengers killed. Eyewitnesses claim that the plane’s wing hit the runway and the plane caught fire and then crashed violently. Rescue teams are still working on the scene in order to control the incident and put out the fires

18 people were killed after a passenger plane caught fire and crashed into a riverbed during takeoff from Nepal’s capital Kathmandu to the nearby city of Pokhara. There were 19 people on board, but only the captain survived the crash, and he is now being treated in hospital with a head injury, an airport spokesman said.

The crash happened today around 11:00 a.m. local time, the Kathmandu Post reports. The plane was carrying two crew members and 17 technicians to the city of Pokhara to repair another plane, officials said, noting that 18 bodies were found at the scene. Eyewitness reports say that the plane took off from the southern end of the runway and suddenly overturned when the tip of the wing hit the ground. The plane caught fire immediately and then plunged into a ravine on the east side of the runway.

Police and firefighters are still on the scene carrying out rescue operations, and heavy smoke can be seen at the airport. Tribhuvan International Airport, Nepal’s main hub for international and domestic flights, was closed while emergency crews worked. It is monsoon season in Kathmandu but according to meteorologists it was not raining at the time of the crash, but visibility was low across the capital.

On January 15 last year, 72 people were killed when a twin-engine ATR 72-500 operated by Yeti Airlines plunged into a riverbed while approaching Pokhara International Airport in the foothills of the Himalayas. The crash site was located about 1.6 kilometers from the track, at an altitude of about 820 meters. Investigators later revealed that the pilots accidentally cut off the power, causing the crash that killed everyone on board. It was Nepal’s deadliest air crash since 1992, when a Pakistan International Airlines Airbus A300 crashed into a hillside near Kathmandu, killing all 167 people on board.
