Only a miracle can save Southampton at the bottom of the Premier League

The Premier League back-to-back could become the worst team ever in the league.

of Liverpool The run away at the top of the league and Manchester City’s defeats have not been the only things to talk about in the Premier League, when the series reached the semi-finals last weekend.

At the bottom of the series, Southampton has collected only six points and threatens to end up as the worst-performing team of all time in the Premier League, which started in 1992. Southampton was promoted to the Premier League in the spring after beating Leeds in the Championship promotion qualifiers.

The previous team that was just as bad is Derby, who managed one win and eight draws in the 2007-2008 season. The relegation of the derby was confirmed already record early, in March, and the traditional club has not reached the Premier League since then.

In the 2007–08 season, historians of British football were watching to see if Derby had as dismal a season as the oldest one-win team, Loughborough AFC, who spent the 1899–00 season at the bottom of the Second Division. Loughborough was out of business for that season.

Southamptonin it is particularly worrying that in the middle of the 2007-2008 season, Derby had one more point than the current bottom of the Premier League.

Southampton took their only win so far at home against Everton at the beginning of November. He still coached the team then Russell Martinwho was sacked in mid-December after Southampton lost 0–5 to Tottenham.

Under Martin, Southampton stubbornly stuck to a possession-based game, even if it didn’t bring results. Croatian pilot hired to replace Martin Ivan Jurić49, shaped the team’s play in a decidedly more straightforward direction in his first games in charge of Southampton, but that didn’t help the points collection either.

Jurić, who created his coaching career in Italy, has enough challenges at the helm of Southampton at both ends of the field. The team has conceded 39 goals in 19 matches, roughly two per match, and managed only 12 hits.

Croatian coach Ivan Jurić has not got Southampton’s game to his liking.

This is also reflected in the statistics – Cameron Archer, Joe Wednesday, Tyler Dibling and Adam Armstrong are Southampton’s top scorers. They all have a combined two league goals so far.

The biggest ones the concerns have been the team’s tendency to make mistakes in game situations. The statistics compiled by the BBC show that Southampton is at the top in errors leading to goals in Europe’s five leading football leagues. The “saints” have eleven of them.

The fact that Southampton has been able to create more chances in front of the opponent’s net than some of its rivals brings hope for the better.

The example of Sheffield United can also be found as encouragement from previous years. It had only five league points in the 2020-2021 Premier League season at this stage, but thanks to Kiri in the spring season, United ended up with 23 points.

In the end, it collected seven wins.

However, the attitude movement did not save Sheffield United, and they ended up last in the series. The statistics are merciless in this regard: Every team that has had six points or less in the English top flight at the halfway stage of the season has been relegated.

Statistics service Opta has calculated that Southampton’s chances of remaining in the Premier League are less than one percent.
