Chad was the victim of an attack in the presidential compound – this is how it was avoided

In a failed night attack on Chad’s presidential compound, 18 attackers who entered the presidential compound in the capital N’Djamena were killed, after stabbing to death one guard and wounding two others. The government spokeswoman described the raid as an unorganized move by a group that was under the influence of alcohol and drugs, which was quickly neutralized by the security forces.

The strange case at night occurred after the end of the visit of the Chinese foreign minister to the country, and soon after Chad canceled a military cooperation agreement with France – a significant strategic move in the region.

According to the reports, 24 attackers drove to the presidential compound, penetrated inside and stabbed the guards. The security forces responded quickly, killing 18 of them and arresting the remaining 6. government spokesman, Abraham Kulamallahemphasized that it is probably not a terrorist attack.

Chad has a complex political background. “This is a country rich in oil, but at the same time a country with one of the highest rates of poverty in Africa,” said a source close to the event. The country is at a regional crossroads, when neighboring countries began to turn to Russia and its friends for aid, instead of the various Western countries (including, for example, France).

The country is run by the president Mehmet Idris Debiwho took the reins of power back into his hands after rebels assassinated his father, the president Idris Debi.
