The open wounds of Neukölln

Even worse: in a hospital in Neukölln. After all, a fictional, whereby the question of how close the uncomfortable setting is in reality should always resonate – especially among people who regularly read the daily mirror. For example, it does not take long for the first victims of a shootout to be dragged into the foyer of this Berlin emergency room and the security service has to keep friends and family of the injured from the violent penetration into the rescue center.

Organizing life -threatening chaos in the new “Surf Berlin” series is to be organized by the new chief doctor Dr. Parker (Haley Louise Jones), who wanted to leave her old job in Munich for personal reasons. After a few weeks, her three predecessors threw back in the “worst hospital in Berlin” – the last one after an ominous class on May 1st, during which a young teacher died. Anyone who was responsible for this is still unclear. The should Dr. Change parker.

Drill in a skull

The new colleagues, annoyed by the fast run on the executive floor, very warmly welcome Parker. Two men are the exception: the nicely rocked trauma surgeon Ben Weber (Slavko Popadić) and the assistant doctor Dom Kohn (Aram Tafreshian) as the only good man in the entire hospital. But you can’t count on these two, as it soon turns out: one is difficult to drug -dependent and also drills in mind in minds of family members of his colleagues. The other is either highly incompetent, or simply a high forklift.

A ally can finally be gained by the intention of a better job. The Turkish -born surgeon Emina Ertan (Şafak Şengül) urgently wants to get out of Berlin, also to build up spatial distance from her family, who has no idea that the daughter is lesbian. Soon for Dr. However, Ertan, however, to think about the move again: the young paramedic Olivia (Samirah Breuer), who, together with her colleague Olaf (Bernhard Schütz), supplies the emergency room with new patients every day.

The head author Samuel Jefferson, who worked as an emergency doctor in London, and his team have been carried away by certain Berlin clichés. The paramedics get junkies out of toilet houses, pull knives from the butt of half-strong with a migration background, are flirted with after parties, while oral sex takes place in an adjoining room and a body is located in the other. Screens in the hospital have bullet holes, at night the doctors sweat in the club.

Death as an everyday life in the emergency room

Once all of this is ticked off, space opens for unexpected things in which the series unfolds a large emotional force. A routine operation in the old people’s home, which becomes a horror film. The treatment of a homeless woman whose wounds have been untouched for weeks. Minor refugees who have been infected with syphilis in the zoo. The moment when a doctor shows that a baby born too early will no longer breathe.

Alex Schaad and Fabian Möhrke stage this scene without much pathos, almost casual than what it is: everyday life in the emergency room. And the spectators shake all the more.

In the large pool of the hospital series, “sick Berlin” swims for themselves. Compare with German models à la “Schwarzwaldklinik” and Co. you don’t even have to try. But also from international genre sizes such as “Emergency Room” and “Grey’s Anatomy” is the KO production, which was originally developed for Sky and finally for ZDFneo and Apple. Because while things are also serious, social debates are taken up and criticism of health policy is being taken, these scenes regularly alternate with moments of lightness when the authors sometimes turn to the soap and humor controller.

There are no breaks in “Surf Berlin”, neither for the chronically understaffed staff, nor for the audience. The fact that you do not feel scared of it, but absolutely wants to watch the doctor in their permanent overwhelming, are the great art that succeeds in the team and author team as well as the great ensemble here. The hope of healing cannot be killed in this nightmare hospital either.
