Rowing: Will Jari Saario soon run out of oars? “It’s quite worrying”

Saario left Cape Horn, the southern tip of South America, on November 11, aiming for Cape Town, South Africa. Now there are about 2,500 kilometers behind and 5,500 kilometers ahead.

The winds push Saario to the southeast, when the direction should be northeast. Even the driving anchor doesn’t help keep the boat in place, and Saario opened up about the problems on Instagram.

“A big wave turns the boat like clockwork. When the anchor swims with the waves and the boat turns, the lines follow like on water skis and sometimes they get tangled around the rudder,” the video states.

“The rope of the driving anchor has now gone around that rudder, and I have no choice but to jump into the sea in this storm and disconnect it, otherwise it will destroy that rudder,” Saario says in the video.

Island according to the most important equipment for finding ropes at sea are a mask and a knife.

“But it’s not nice to go swimming there in waves like this. But everything’s fine, everything’s fine”, all aboard the boat.

Saario says that both times the broken oars were rowing oars, not spare oars.

“I just have to be more careful all the time in what weather I dare to sail in. I have to be able to read the sea better.”
