Kallas explores with Iran’s Foreign Minister “diplomatic avenues” for a de-escalation in the Middle East

The High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Policy, Kaja Kallas, has explored in a call with the Foreign Minister of Iran, Abbas Araqchi, “diplomatic avenues” for a de-escalation in the Middle East, a region immersed in a war after the attacks by the United States and Israel on Iran on February 28.

This was revealed in a press conference from Brussels by the EU Foreign Affairs spokesperson, Anouar El Anouni, who detailed that the head of European diplomacy held calls that Sunday with her counterparts from Turkey, Qatar and South Korea about the situation in the Middle East, and that she also spoke with the Foreign Minister of Iran.

“These contacts are part of the EU’s ongoing efforts to explore diplomatic avenues to move forward,” he went on to explain, stating that in all of these calls he made “a clear call for de-escalation and maximum containment,” and defended that “any gesture in that direction is welcome.”

“We remain in constant contact with our partners in the region and other countries, as you have seen, including Iran, to continue working on de-escalation and safeguarding regional stability, security and respect for international law,” added El Anouni.

Asked about specific details of the call between Kallas and Araqchi, he did not want to go into “the content of what was discussed at the diplomatic level”, and stressed the EU’s commitment to de-escalation and “the urgent need to guarantee and reopen the Strait of Hormuz”.
