Pakistan-Afghanistan conflict: military operations continue

Pakistan has resumed military operations against Afghanistan following a temporary ceasefire. The break agreed for the highest Islamic festival, Eid al-Fitr, ended on the night of March 24th, the Foreign Ministry announced on Thursday in Islamabad.

The operations would continue until the objectives were achieved and the Afghan Taliban leadership stopped supporting terrorist infrastructure. Islamabad accuses the Taliban of harboring Islamist fighters who carry out attacks in Pakistan.

Last month saw the toughest fighting in years

Last month saw the heaviest fighting in years, which is said to have resulted in heavy losses on both sides. The government in Kabul says more than 400 people were killed in a Pakistani airstrike. Pakistan rejected this and said the attacks “targeted military facilities and infrastructure supporting terrorists.”

Afghanistan denies supporting militant groups. The key Torkham border crossing was temporarily opened on Thursday for the return of hundreds of Afghan refugees. Pakistan demands that all Afghan citizens without valid documents leave the country. The United Nations criticizes this as a violation of international obligations.
