They investigate a former Meta employee accused of downloading 30,000 private images of Facebook users

London’s Metropolitan Police are investigating a former Meta employee accused of illegally downloading 30,000 private photos of users on the social network Facebook through a program designed by himself to bypass security controls.

The suspect was arrested last November for unauthorized access to computer material but is currently free on bail while the investigation is underway, according to The Telegraph.

According to court documents, collected by the British media, the police have indicated that he is accused of having accessed and downloaded approximately 30,000 private images belonging to Facebook users while working for Meta through a ‘script’ designed to bypass internal detection systems of the company.

For its part, a Meta spokesperson confirmed to the BBC that The vulnerability was discovered more than a year agoat which point they dismissed the employee with immediate effect and referred the matter to the authorities.

Additionally, the company notified users affected by this security breach and has since updated its security systems to stop these types of attacks.

However, this security breach is the umpteenth in the history of Meta, which has already received a fine of 251 million euros after the leak of 29 million Facebook accounts in 2018.
