The EU, Spain and 7 other countries call for a “definitive solution” in Iran to avoid a “global energy crisis”

The European Union and eight countries, including Spain, the United Kingdom and Canada, have celebrated the two-week ceasefire agreed this Wednesday between the United States and Iran, and have asked that negotiations now focus on finding “a quick and definitive solution” to the war in the Middle East to avoid “a serious global energy crisis.”

In a joint statement in which they also thank Pakistan “and all the partners involved” for helping to achieve the agreement between Washington and Tehran, the signatories have also claimed to guarantee the safety of Iran’s civilian population and guarantee security in the region, implementing the ceasefire also in Lebanon.

“We welcome the two-week ceasefire that concluded today between the United States and Iran. We thank Pakistan and all partners involved for facilitating this important agreement. The goal now must be to negotiate a quick and definitive solution to the war in the coming days. This can only be achieved through diplomatic channels,” the letter reads.

Among the signatories is the president of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen; the president of the European Council, António Costa; the president of the Government, Pedro Sánchez; the president of France, Emmanuel Macron; the Chancellor of Germany, Friedrich Merz; and the Prime Ministers of Canada, Mark Carney; Italy, Giorgia Meloni; United Kingdom, Keir Starmer; Netherlands, Rob Jetten and Denmark, Mette Frederiksen.

All of them have agreed on the need to move “quickly towards a substantial negotiated solution”, since in their opinion “it will be crucial” to protect Iran’s civilian population and guarantee security in the region. “It can avoid a serious global energy crisis,” they add.

They have also emphasized their support for “these diplomatic efforts”, and have detailed that they maintain “close contact” with the United States and other partners, since they have shown their willingness to contribute to guaranteeing freedom of navigation in the Strait of Hormuz.

In the early hours of this Wednesday, the President of the United States, Donald Trump, announced that he has agreed to “suspend the attacks” against Iran for a period of two weeks, after which Tehran has stressed that for two weeks “safe” passage through the strategic Strait of Hormuz will be possible, although “through coordination” with the Army of the Asian country.

Subsequently, the Prime Minister of Pakistan, Shehbaz Sharif, stated that the agreement by which Washington has agreed to suspend its attacks against Iran for two weeks includes “its allies” and is an “immediate ceasefire throughout the territory, including Lebanon and other places”, although the Israeli Prime Minister, Benjamin Netanyahu, has ruled out that the pact includes Israeli operations in Lebanese territory.
