US Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth said on Wednesday that the Strait of Hormuz is open and that the US military will remain in the Middle East to ensure that Iran adheres to the ceasefire agreement, reports Reuters. Hegseth said the United States had achieved a decisive military victory over Iran and that Iran’s missile program had been destroyed. Hegseth and Joint Chiefs of Staff Dan Caine spoke to reporters a day after US President Donald Trump withdrew his threat of massive strikes on Iran, two hours before a deadline he had set for Tehran to open the blocked Strait of Hormuz.
Tehran, which has demonstrated its ability to cut off energy supplies in the Gulf by controlling the strait, also declared victory and said it was entering the talks without confidence in American negotiators.
“The enemy has suffered an undeniable, historic and heavy defeat in its unjust, illegal and criminal war against the Iranian nation,” announced Iran’s Supreme National Security Council.
Caine said that the US military goals in Iran have been achieved, and that the ceasefire represents a pause, and the forces are ready to continue combat operations if necessary.
“We hope that Iran will choose lasting peace,” he said.
“To be clear, the ceasefire is a pause, and the armed forces are still ready, if ordered or called upon, to continue combat operations with the same speed and precision we have demonstrated over the past 38 days,” the general added.
