La Jornada: Salary mass of countrymen in the US is equivalent to 60% of the Mexican GDP

In 2025, the wage bill of Mexican workers in the United States amounted to one trillion 86,769 million dollars, which is equivalent to 59.2 percent of Mexico’s gross domestic product, the Latin American and Caribbean Remittances Forum revealed yesterday.

In a report, the organization that belongs to the Center for Latin American Monetary Studies (Cemla) highlighted that, of the aforementioned amount, 717,444 million dollars were generated by Americans of Mexican origin and 369,325 million dollars by migrant countrymen.

He highlighted that the wage bill in the United States for Mexican workers doubled between 2015 and 2025, increasing by more than 500 billion dollars.

In 2011, these perceptions were equivalent to 31 percent of the Mexican GDP, which was one trillion 227 million dollars; that proportion rose to 42.8 percent in 2015, when it reached $1.211 billion, and to 59.2 percent in 2025, when it reached $1.834 billion.

The Remittance Forum clarified that the measurement of Mexico’s GDP in dollars has been influenced by the appreciation of the peso against the US currency in 2024 and 2025.

The gender gap travels

In 2025, according to the report, in the United States the average annual remuneration of all Mexican workers was 57,182 dollars and was derived from the combination of 60,711 dollars for natives of Mexican origin and 51,380 dollars for immigrants.

He highlighted that the average annual remuneration of native workers of Mexican origin exceeds that of immigrants, both in the case of men and women and in full-time occupations.

In such occupations, the male Mexican immigrant worker obtains an average remuneration of 59,463 dollars annually or 4,955 dollars per month and women 47,565 dollars per year or 3,964 dollars per month.

However, it points out that the average remuneration of a Mexican immigrant worker with citizenship was $71,969 per year or $5,997 per month in 2025. Thus, in the case of men, the United States labor market makes practically no distinction between a Mexican immigrant worker with citizenship and a worker of Mexican origin born in that country.

According to the report, figures from the United States labor market indicate that at the end of February 2026, the salaries of Mexican workers continued to increase, both in the case of natives and immigrants.
