La Jornada: EU imposes 100% tariff on Chinese vehicles

The president of the United States, Donald Trump, assured that he imposed a 100 percent tariff on cars of Chinese origin.

In Truth Social, the president criticized that the Chinese automotive industry is “destroying” Europe, since it does not allow brands like Mercedes and BMW to appear in that market, which is why he wants to prevent them from decimating American manufacturers. “And we don’t have Chinese cars in our country because they would have destroyed General Motors and Ford.”

Despite the tense relationship with former President Joe Biden, Trump highlighted his management in this regard. “It’s pretty much the only thing (Biden) did right.”

A video that the magnate uploaded to his social network includes a fragment of his interview on Fox News in which he commented that he would apply 50 percent tariffs to the Asian country if it were to provide military support to Iran in its current joint war with Israel.

It is in this context that Trump will travel to Beijing in May for a meeting with Xi Jinping, the Chinese leader with whom he postponed the April meeting due to the risk of a trip in the middle of war.

China has been diminished in this sector in North America, since at the beginning of this year 50 percent tariffs came into effect for imports of cars, auto parts, bicycles and motorcycles from the Asian country, a measure that was announced by the Ministry of Economy in September 2025. An exception to the affected firms is JAC, since the Chinese automaker has an assembly plant in Ciudad Sahagún, Hidalgo, which is nine years old.
