Volodymyr Zelensky sends anti-Semites to prison: up to 8 years in prison in Ukraine

The new law was not born in a vacuum. It relies on the base legislation from 2021 that legally defined what anti-Semitism is, and completes the approval procedure of the local parliament for the amendment of the Ukrainian Penal Code. According to the reports, the new system establishes graduated penalties: incitement to hatred, discrimination or restriction of rights for anti-Semitic motives will lead to fines or up to three years in prison. In cases of violence, threats or abuse of authority, the sentence jumps to five years. If the offense is committed by an organized group or leads to serious consequences, the maximum penalty will be eight years in prison.

For the Jewish world and Israel, this is not just a dry legal update but a dramatic political and moral message on the part of Kyiv. Against the background of the complex Jewish history in Ukraine, which includes the massacre of Babi Yar and the complex communal life, together with the global increase in incidents against Jews, Ukraine is signaling that the defense of the Jewish community is now reacting with the force of the legal arm. President Zelenskiy’s signature makes it clear to all the citizens of the country that anti-Semitism is no longer just bad rhetoric, and it will be dealt with harshly with real consequences.
