Lula says Trump “has no right to threaten” other countries

In the interview, the PT member defended conversations between large and medium powers to avoid conflicts around the world and said that he spoke about the topic with the Chinese dictator, Xi Jinping, the Indian Prime Minister, Narendra Modi, the Russian dictator, Vladimir Putin, and the French President, Emmanuel Macron.

“Trump does not have the right to wake up in the morning and think he can threaten a country. He was not elected to do this, the world does not give him the right to do so, the American Constitution does not guarantee this, much less the UN Charter. So, what is missing? Political leaders are missing to take responsibility. For the world, not for a country, no matter how important that country is”, added the PT member.

In the interview, Lula defended the Cuban regime, where Trump suggested that he will carry out a military operation after the end of the war in Iran.

“There is no explanation for a blockade for 70 years. If people who don’t like Cuba, who don’t like the Cuban regime, are concerned about the Cuban people, why don’t these people care about Haiti, which doesn’t have a communist regime? Cuba needs a chance to do things”, said the PT member.

Regarding the 50% tariffs that the United States applied to imports from Brazil last year, which were suspended largely due to US food inflation and a February ruling by the US Supreme Court, Lula said that Trump’s arguments for imposing the surcharges were “not true.”

“I decided to be very patient regarding Trump’s taxation and I told him, verbatim, that it was important that two countries governed by two 80-year-old men were mature when it came to talking,” said the Brazilian president. “Two heads of state don’t have to think ideologically.”

Regarding the presidential election in October, in which polls indicate that his main opponent should be Senator Flávio Bolsonaro (PL-RJ), Lula said that he is preparing for a fourth term and that his re-election is “completely possible”.

“I can tell you that Bolsonarism will not govern this country again. Because the people will prefer democracy”, he stated.
