Finland Lukas Saha won silver in the under-66 kg men’s EC Judo in Georgia on Thursday.
Saha, ranked number one in the tournament, faced the third-ranked Russian in the final match Murad Tshopanov.
The EC gold was decided in overtime. That’s when Tshopanov was able to knock Saha down for a yuko.
In overtime, any single point performance is enough to win.
En route to the final, Saha defeated Serbia with ippon by Marko Jorgic and Armenia By Davit Abrahamyan.
Semi-final battle for Russian 18-year-olds Abdullakh Partshieyev against also went to overtime. Saha took care of it quickly with a crank worthy of a yuko.
Russians are allowed to hold their flag in Tbilisi. Last November, judo became the first Olympic sport that allowed Russians to fully return to competitions.
27 years old Saha has now achieved a medal in the prestigious competition in three consecutive years (World Championship bronze 2024, European Championship bronze 2025). He is sixth in the world rankings in his weight class.
European champion three years ago Martti Puumalainen is the only other Finnish judo medalist in the last 30 years.
Puumalainen fell ill during these European Championships and is not participating in the over 100kg series.
So a total of seven Finns will be seen in Tbilisi.
They will play on Friday Pihla Matikainen, Pihla Salonen, Luna-Lumia Seikkula and Valtteri Olin.
Eetu Ihanamäki will compete on Saturday and Emma Krapu on Sunday.
