Assoutenti’s alarm: "The high cost of fuel also causes the price of food to skyrocket"

The expensive fuel caused prices to skyrocket fresh food productswhich, as is known, travel by road and are directly affected by the trend of diesel. This was stated by Assoutenti, who carried out a study based on Istat data to understand which goods were most affected by the price increases at the pump linked to the situation in the Middle East.

Food

Looking at food products, the eggplant recorded the strongest rise in retail prices in the last month, rising on average by +21.5% on year – reveals the association – In second place are the peaswhich increased by +19.6%, followed by berries such as blueberries, raspberries, blackberries, currants, which increased by +16.3%. The zuchinis rise in price by +11.1% on year, i lemon of +10.8%, the strawberries of +10.4%, theegumi by +9.9%, tomatoes by +9%. Also affected by the price increases are artichokes (+8.8%), eggs (+8.5%), beef (+8.4%), sheep meat (+7.2%), cauliflowers and broccoli (+7.2%), citrus fruits (+6.6%), peppers (+6.4%).

Other assets

As regards non-food goods, Assoutenti reports heavy increases for jewellery, whose prices in the last month have risen on average by +33.5% on year in the wake of gold prices, while national flights, due to the combined effect of Easter and theincrease in jet fuel, European flight tickets increased by +12.6%, +6%. Firewood and pellets recorded an increase of +8.2%, and courier and parcel delivery services also cost more, +6.5%.

“Prices in the food sector are being affected byfuel escalation which has aggravated transport costs, especially for fresh products that are transported by road along the Peninsula – explains President Gabriele Melluso – For this reason the government must extend the cut in excise duties on petrol and diesel until the end of the emergency and at the same time monitor with the utmost attention any speculation or anomalous price list trends” – concludes Melluso.
