The episode emerged after the spread on social media of an image in which the soldier can be seen hitting the statue, which had already fallen from a cross, until it was decapitated in the Christian village of Debl, near the border with Israel. The IDF, after confirming the authenticity of the material, spoke of behavior “totally inconsistent with the values of the troops” and launched an internal investigation, promising severe measures.
The reaction was also immediate on a political level. Foreign Minister Gideon Sa’ar defined the incident as “a shameful act”, reiterating that it was a gesture “totally against our values” and presenting an official apology to the Christians.
Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu also condemned the episode, saying he was “shocked and saddened” and assuring that appropriate disciplinary measures will be taken. At the same time, a commitment to work with the local community to restore the damaged statue was also announced.
