US operation intercepts Iranian oil tanker

In a statement released on Tuesday, the United States Department of Defense reported that the operation took place “without incident” and involved an exercise of visitation rights, maritime interdiction and boarding of the ship M/T Tifani, described as an unflagged vessel.

According to the agency, the action was conducted within the area of ​​responsibility of the United States Indo-Pacific Command. Images and videos released by authorities show American troops boarding the tanker during the operation.

The Pentagon stated that the approach is part of a broader strategy to combat networks considered illegal and restrict Iran’s financing.

“We will continue to undertake global maritime law enforcement efforts to dismantle illicit networks and intercept sanctioned vessels providing material support to Iran, wherever they operate,” the statement said.

The department also reinforced that “international waters do not constitute a refuge for sanctioned vessels” and that it will continue to work to limit the circulation of these vessels. The operation involves more than 10,000 soldiers, 12 ships and around 100 aircraft positioned in the region.

Ceasefire ends this Wednesday

In recent days, Trump also accused Iran of violating the ceasefire and said Iranian forces had attacked international vessels in the area, including a French ship and a British cargo ship.

The US president also signaled that he may expand military actions if there is no progress in the negotiations, which should have a new round in Pakistan with the participation of vice-president JD Vance. Trump said on Tuesday (21) that Iran had “several times” violated the ceasefire signed between the countries, amid negotiations to end the conflict in the Middle East.

The truce between the countries, which began in early April, is scheduled to end on Wednesday night (22), Washington time. Trump has already signaled that he is unlikely to extend the agreement if there is no progress in negotiations.

“It is highly unlikely that I will extend it,” the president said in a recent interview, adding that he does not intend to “make a bad deal.” The North American also indicated that, without an understanding between the parties, there is an expectation of a resumption of fighting.
