War in Ukraine: kyiv relies on the “Gyurza-1”, a revolutionary mechanical exoskeleton capable of carrying up to 70 kg of loads

A new technological solution which could become indispensable to Ukrainian soldiers. The Kyiv Defense Forces are currently testing the “Gyurza-1”, a new indigenously developed passive exoskeleton.

This mechanical device is designed to reduce the physical load placed on the musculoskeletal system of the soldier when performing combat, logistical, engineering and technical tasks, and helps improve his endurance and strength, while minimizing the risk of injury.

“Our Soldiers perform logistical and combat tasks, many of which involve lifting and carrying various loads. This requires, at a minimum, a strong physical condition,” explains Nazar Yasinskyi, project manager at Military Trade, the Ukrainian company behind the system. “However, due to health issues and age, a significant number of our personnel are unable to meet the extreme demands of war. The exoskeletons help them to withstand enormous tension,” he explains.

Unlike powered exoskeletons, the “Gyurza-1” is entirely mechanical, allowing it to operate without electronics or batteries. This feature greatly simplifies its use and reduces logistical constraints. Lightweight, weighing less than 2 kg, this equipment can be put on or taken off in less than two minutes. It offers military personnel the ability to carry loads of up to 70 kg, while significantly relieving the spine and back muscles.

Optimal redistribution of load weight

Significant improvement in human capabilities is achieved through optimal redistribution of load weight. The system is designed to distribute weight via a rigid back plate and support structure, transferring the load from the upper body to the pelvis and legs. Featuring shoulder supports, a waist module and adjustable leg braces, this exoskeleton adapts to each soldier and is compatible with regular military equipment, such as body armor.

“The Gyurza kit also has other important advantages: it does not modify the silhouette, does not present any element allowing it to be unmasked, does not limit mobility and allows you to get on and off a vehicle, whether armored or tracked,” explains Military Trade.

Representatives of the Ukrainian company claim that their exoskeleton has undeniable advantages compared to electronic versions. According to them, the latter suffer from limited battery life, a certain rigidity of movements and increased complexity for first aid in the event of an injury.
