Car sales are growing in Europe, hybrids and electricity are getting stronger

Ožujak brought a jump in sales on the annual level by about 12.5 percent, after a 1.4 percent growth in the previous month.

The market was supported by strong demand, additionally stimulated by new and modified tax breaks and incentives in major European economies, the association states.

The jump reflects good results in the four leading markets, so Germany recorded an increase in sales in March by approximately 16.0 percent, and France by 12.9 percent. Spain is also close, with an 11.7 percent jump in sales.

In the group of the ‘big four’, sales in Italy increased the most in spring, by 7.6 percent.

Popular hybrid electrics

In the first three months of this year, 546,937 new fully electric cars were registered, 30 percent more than in the same period last year. Thus, their market share increased to 19.4 percent, from last year’s 15.2 percent.

In the group of four market leaders, sales of fully electric cars in Italy grew the most, by 65.7 percent. It is followed by France with a jump in sales by 50.4 percent, followed by Spain and Germany, where it grew slightly more than 41 percent.

The most popular powertrain was also at the beginning of this year hybrid electric cars with a market share of 38.6 percent and 1,089,421 new registrations, 12.8 percent more than last year.

According to ACEA’s definition, the group includes “full and partial hybrids” which, depending on the power of the battery, can drive on average up to 62 percent of the time on electric power only.

Sales of plug-in hybrids also grew strongly, by about 30 percent, with 268,344 vehicles registered. Their market share was 9.5 percent in the first quarter.

Sales of gasoline and diesel vehicles decreased again, by 18.2 and 15.7 percent, respectively.

The market share of gasoline vehicles fell in the first quarter to 22.6 percent, and that of diesel vehicles to 7.7 percent, ACEA data show.
