“Strategic realignment”: Julia Stoschek Foundation leaves Berlin

The exhibition rooms in Berlin were opened in 2016. According to the foundation, the changing exhibitions were visited by more than 450,000 people. The Düsseldorf location will reopen in April 2027 after extensive renovation.

Stoschek’s collection with a focus on video art is one of the most important private collections of contemporary art in Germany. It includes, for example, works by Marina Abramović, Monica Bonvicini, Ólafur Elíasson, Tracey Emin, Christoph Schlingensief and Katharina Sieverding.

Implement projects increasingly internationally

With the closure of the Berlin location, the foundation is combining a “strategic realignment”: In the future, they will increasingly implement projects internationally in order to make the collection accessible “to a global audience,” according to the statement.

A recent exhibition in Los Angeles called “What a Wonderful World: An Audiovisual Poem” had more than 30,000 visitors after a six-week run, according to the foundation. The foundation will remain connected to the city of Berlin even without a fixed location and will organize temporary formats, it was said.
