The opening of the new Berlin Modern art museum will apparently be further delayed. As the rbb reports, the opening date of the museum will probably be postponed to mid-2030 due to moisture damage to the shell. The President of the Prussian Cultural Heritage Foundation, Marion Ackermann, told the broadcaster this in an interview.
Due to the damage, a delay of around eight months is currently expected. Most recently, after several delays, an opening was planned for 2029.
As the foundation further announced, according to rbb, “microbial infestation” was also found in the building in connection with the moisture damage. These include mold, algae and bacteria. Countermeasures have been initiated, but a construction stop is not necessary.
The topping-out ceremony was celebrated at the museum in the fall. The new building, designed by the Swiss office Herzog & de Meuron, is intended to expand the New National Gallery and create space to show more 20th century art. Many works – by Otto Dix or Andy Warhol, for example – are currently stored in the depot.
