Australia: woman falls into a latrine and remains trapped for hours

Not just snakes, poisonous spiders and aggressive kangaroos: one of the dangers of traveling around Australia is also ending up in shit, metaphorically aside. A woman who stopped for one knows something about it bathroom break during a car trip inland it remained trapped up to her waist in a pit latrine for approximately three hoursuntil she was saved by a local worker who happened to be passing by.

The story

The woman, who was with her husband and two children, was returning home to Canberra after visiting relatives in Darwin when the accident occurred. According to the BBC, which cites the Facebook page of the “Action for Alice” community, the latrine involved in the accident is located in the Henbury Meteorites Conservation Zoneabout 145 km south-west of remote town of Alice Springs.

What are pit latrines

Pit latrines are rudimentary, unflushed toilets that collect human waste in a deep hole in the ground. They are common in remote or rural areas, such as isolated campsites.

The woman’s husband managed to attract the attention of the worker, who he lowered a rope into the pit to allow the woman to hold onand then took her out with his car. It took more than 45 minutes just to save her, but the woman spent three hours in diapers, excrement and urineto. She was taken to hospital and did not suffer serious injuries.

The precedents

This is not the first time pit latrine accidents have occurred in Australia.

• In July 2024, firefighters had to dismantle one in Indigo Valley, Victoria, after a man was trapped.
• In 2012, a 65-year-old woman was airlifted to hospital after falling on her back into a pit latrine in central Queensland and breaking her leg.

Pit latrines have caused fatalities in other places as well.

In 2014, one five-year-old schoolboy in South Africa he died following the collapse of the pit latrine he was using. In 2018, after the death of a second student, it emerged that beyond 4,500 schools in the country they had pit latrines, often poorly constructed and without coverage. In the same year, the South African government committed to eliminating them completely from institutions.
