Bundesliga: Bayern’s historic comeback – Heidenheim hopes again

FC Bayern Munich barely managed the dress rehearsal for the Champions League clash in three days at Paris Saint-Germain with a crazy comeback. In Mainz, the old and new German champions won 4:3 (0:3) on matchday 31 of the Bundesliga after a disastrous first half. In the relegation battle, Heidenheim, the bottom team, took advantage of the 2-0 (1-0) win against 16th place in the table. FC St. Pauli new hope.

The penultimate VfL Wolfsburg missed the hoped-for home win in a 0-0 draw against Borussia Mönchengladbach. Bayer Leverkusen won the small Rhine derby 2:1 (1:0) at 1. FC Köln. FC Augsburg and Eintracht Frankfurt drew 1-1 (1-0).

At halftime, Mainz leads 3-0 against Bayern

Mainz literally dismantled the old and new German champions in the first half. It was 3-0 after goals from Dominik Kohr (15th), Paul Nebel (29th) and Sheraldo Becker (45th + 2). The fact that Bayern coach Vincent Kompany made eight starting eleven changes compared to the 2-0 cup win in Leverkusen didn’t bother the Munich team at all.

At least two offensive stars, Harry Kane and Michael Olise, came into the game at half-time, and that immediately had an effect. Nicolas Jackson (53′), Olise (73′) with a fantastic shot, Jamal Musiala (81′) and Kane (83′) turned the game around completely. The last time Munich overturned a 3-0 half-time deficit was in the legendary 6-5 win in Bochum in 1976.

Heidenheim’s early starters shock St. Pauli

The Heidenheimers, who would not have been able to be saved if they had lost to St. Pauli, started the game perfectly. Striker Budu Sivzivadze took the lead after just three minutes, which visibly gave the hosts momentum. In the final phase, Eren Dinkci (82nd) made everything clear. Coach Frank Schmidt’s team is now only four points behind Hamburg, who have been waiting for a three-pointer in the fight to stay in the league since the end of February.

Wolfsburg’s zero number against Mönchengladbach

The Wolfsburg team couldn’t get past a 0-0 draw in the basement duel against the team from Lower Rhine and remain second to last in the table. Gladbach’s Jens Castrop (90th + 2) saw red. Wolfsburg’s deficit to FC St. Pauli is only one point. And on the 34th matchday, the Lower Saxony team will travel to Hamburg’s Millerntor. The Gladbachers, on the other hand, collected another point to stay in the league and are six points clear of the relegation place with three game days before the end of the season.

Schick leads Bayer to the derby victory

Double packer Patrik Schick (43rd/hand penalty and 52nd) kept Leverkusen’s hopes of qualifying for the Champions League with his goals. 1. FC Köln, for whom Joker Luca Waldschmidt scored (78th), must continue to tremble in the relegation battle after the 1-2 derby defeat. For the hosts it was the first defeat under coach René Wagner.

Augsburg saved early

After the 1-1 draw against Eintracht Frankfurt, FC Augsburg was saved early. The club can now plan for its 16th Bundesliga season. Anton Kade (44th) initially gave the Bavarian Swabians the lead, Ritsu Doan (66th) equalized for the Hessians. The draw lifts Frankfurt to seventh place, at least temporarily. On Sunday, SC Freiburg, which like Eintracht has 43 points, can improve in Dortmund.
