Gaza is holding elections for the first time in decades

Gaza is holding local elections for the first time since 2006.

They are taking place in the West Bank, as well as in Deir el-Balakh, in central Gaza, where Hamas, recognized by the West as a terrorist group, operates.

Hamas was not allowed to run, and several other factions boycotted it.

According to the Central Electoral Commission located in Ramallah, more than one million voters in the Palestinian territories are eligible to participate in the elections, including 70 thousand people in Deir El Balakh, where 12 polling stations were planned to be opened. Results are expected late Saturday or Sunday evening.

As part of US President Trump’s 20-point peace plan, which allowed the cessation of hostilities in October last year, a fragile ceasefire is in place in the Gaza Strip.

“Hamas” keeps its positions firmly in the regions of Gaza, from where the Israeli troops were withdrawn.
