Google will invest at least $10 billion in artificial intelligence company Anthropic, and that amount could rise to as much as $40 billion if Anthropic meets certain performance goals, Bloomberg reports. This move comes at a time of intensifying competition in the field of generative artificial intelligence, where key players are fighting for supremacy.
Continuation of the race in investments
The investment comes just days after Amazon invested an initial $5 billion in Anthropic, with the deal also leaving the door open for further investment depending on results. Both investments value Anthropic at $350 billion and underscore the huge interest in advanced AI technologies.
This is not the first time that Google enters Anthropic, even though that they are competitors at the same time because Google is developing its own AI models like Gemini. The strategy obviously includes support for external innovators in order to ensure a strong position on the market.
Rapid growth and increasing demand
Anthropic has seen explosive growth in the use of its Claude models and related products, such as the Claude Code tool. This tool promises a significant acceleration and increase in efficiency in software development, although in practice the results differ depending on the nature of the project and the way of use.
Several factors have contributed to the company’s success in recent months, including the controversy surrounding rival OpenAI and its ChatGPT, as well as the development of new products such as Claude Cowork, which performs similar tasks for general office work.
The sudden increase in demand for Anthropica’s services has led to occasional outages and other technical problems. The company therefore tested solutions such as introducing restrictions on usage during peak hours or removing the most computationally demanding tools from cheaper subscription plans.
Partnership for computing power
These investments are primarily intended to close the gap between the demand and supply of computing power needed to run AI models. Amazon and Google are providing Anthropic with IPs suitable for training artificial intelligence and cloud capacity to help it scale quickly.
Such a model has become commonplace in the AI industry. Established companies like Microsoft, Google and Amazon have products and services that can help new AI companies grow, so they invest in them so that they in turn can pay for their products and services.
