US unveils plans for ‘limited edition’ passports that will include Trump’s image

United States authorities have unveiled a plan to place the image of President Donald Trump on passports as part of a “limited edition” to mark the 250th anniversary of the founding of the country, a fact that breaks with the rule of not placing photographs of current leaders on official documents.

“Patriot passport unlocked. Limited edition. Stamped for America 250,” the White House reported on social networks, after the State Department unveiled the design of these documents “to commemorate the 250th anniversary of independence.”

Thus, the Department’s deputy spokesperson, Tommy Pigott, noted that the ministry “is preparing to issue a limited number of passports specially designed to commemorate this historic occasion,” without for now there being details on the number of documents that will be issued by Washington.

The announcement was immediately criticized by the Democratic Party, whose House Foreign Affairs Committee has said that Secretary of State Marco Rubio “should spend more time convincing his boss to end this chosen war against Iran, and less time wasting tax dollars to please Trump’s vanity.”

Current US passports include images of the country’s history, so Trump would become the first sitting president to appear in these documents, within the framework of the Administration’s actions to include the president’s name in various institutions, including the Kennedy Center.
