La Jornada: CFE’s operating costs rise 12.7% due to the rise in gas

The operating costs and expenses of the Federal Electricity Commission (CFE) grew 12.7 percent in the fourth quarter of 2025 compared to the same period in 2024 due to the 34.8 percent increase in the price of gas, the institution reported in a statement.

Operating costs and expenses totaled 575 thousand 123 million pesos in the period October-December 2025.

“The conflict between Iran and the United States and Israel has triggered natural gas prices, with increases in the European and Asian markets. The CFE mainly uses (continental) natural gas for the generation of electrical energy in its combined cycle plants and not liquefied natural gas (LNG), which has recently shown relevant increases,” he clarified.

Profits grow

Although the increase in the price of gas had an impact on CFE’s costs, the company obtained a net profit of 13,925.4 million pesos in the fourth quarter of 2025, reversing the net loss of 185,787.5 million pesos recorded in the same quarter of the previous year.

“The performance reflects a significant operational and financial recovery compared to 2024,” is mentioned in one of the analyzes that the company delivered to the Mexican Stock Exchange (BMV).

The net profit for all of 2025 was 130,740 million pesos, “which contributes to strengthening the CFE’s assets and improving its profitability indicators.”

The result contrasts with the loss that the State company reported in 2024, which was more than 271,574 million pesos.

According to the financial statements of the CFE, the company’s total income in the last quarter of 2025 was 681,999 million pesos, an increase of 2.2 percent compared to the same period in 2024 and an average annual growth of 3.2 percent since 2018.

Income from energy sales represented 76.6 percent of the total and grew 2.3 percent annually.

In the period analyzed, the dynamics of the qualified, domestic and commercial supply sectors stand out, with increases of 30.9, 7.2 and 3.8 percent, respectively.
