Trump considers withdrawing US troops from Germany after criticism

After German Chancellor Friedrich Merz stated that the United States was “humiliated” by Iran in negotiations to end the war in the Middle East, US President Donald Trump wrote this Wednesday (29) on the Truth Social network that the White House is considering reducing the American military presence in German territory.

“The United States is studying and analyzing the possible reduction of troops in Germany,” Trump said in a post on the social network. According to the president, a decision could be announced in the coming days.

According to the agency, EFEthe United States currently maintains around 40,000 troops in Germany, the largest American contingent in Europe. These forces are distributed across strategic bases, such as Ramstein and Stuttgart, which function as command, logistics and operations centers.

According to the United States Army in Europe and Africa (USAREUR-AF), this military presence supports the “deterrence and rapid response” capacity of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO), being considered essential for the security of the European continent.

Trump’s statements come after criticism made by Merz of the American role in the conflict with Iran. According to the chancellor, Washington had been “humiliated” during the negotiations to end the war, in addition to not presenting a clear exit strategy for the conflict.

In response, Trump rejected the criticism and accused the German leader of underestimating the pressure exerted by the United States on Tehran. The American president stated that his government maintains a firm stance and argued that the progress made in containing Iran’s nuclear program is not being properly recognized by European allies.
