Some buildings are no longer habitable: fire in homeless accommodation in southwest Berlin – 15 injured

There was a fire in a homeless shelter in Lichterfelde on Thursday afternoon. A fire brigade spokesman told Tagesspiegel that the building at Reichensteiner Weg 1a was no longer partly habitable. The fire has now been extinguished. More than a hundred firefighters were on duty.

According to the information, residents alerted the fire department around 3:30 p.m. The fire broke out on the second floor of the building. “There was a fire that spread into the attic,” said the spokesman.

Of the 27 people who were in the building, many had already gotten themselves to safety when the fire department arrived. The fire department rescued seven people from the building, two of whom were bedridden, the spokesman said.

15 people suffered smoke poisoning, six of whom had to be treated in a clinic. Some of the residents were able to return to the building. But some would have to be accommodated elsewhere because the building is partly uninhabitable.
