The President of the United States, Donald Trump, ordered this Friday (1st) the withdrawal of 5,000 soldiers from Germany within a period of up to one year. The decision increases tension with Berlin and NATO allies in the face of European resistance to supporting the American military effort in Iran. The measure comes days after Chancellor Friedrich Merz declared that the US was “humiliated” by Iran and that he did not identify an American strategy to end the conflict.
Pentagon spokesman Sean Parnell said the decision is the result of a review of the military presence in Europe. He said the withdrawal should take place between six and twelve months.
A combat brigade will leave Germany. The American contingent in Europe will return to the level of 2022, before Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. The measure revokes the Joe Biden administration’s plan to send a battalion with long-range conventional missiles to the country this year. Washington and Berlin announced this deployment at the 2024 NATO summit in the American capital. Authorities said the withdrawn soldiers will head to the Western Hemisphere and the Indo-Pacific.
Germany is the main US strategic base in Europe
At the end of last year, the US maintained 68,000 active military personnel at bases in Europe, according to the Defense Human Resources Data Center. Of this total, more than 36,400 were in Germany.
The country serves as the main American military hub on the continent, with training and support centers for operations in the Middle East. German bases acted as logistical hubs and resupply points for Operation Epic Fury, the US campaign against Iran.
Germany is home to strategic structures such as the Ramstein Air Base, the US European Command and the headquarters of the US African Command, as well as the Landstuhl Regional Medical Center, the largest American military hospital outside the national territory. The unit treated wounded people from the conflict in Iran.
Trump considers reducing troops in other European countries
On Thursday (30), Trump stated that he is also considering reducing troops in Italy and Spain. Since the start of the war on February 28, Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez has criticized the coordinated US-Israeli offensive and rejected the use of Spanish bases.
Trump reacted with threats of trade sanctions and cited the possibility of suspending Spain from NATO, a hypothesis not supported by the alliance’s rules. Today, around 3,200 American military personnel remain in the country.
In Italy, Giorgia Meloni’s government avoided direct involvement until the end of March, when it denied the use of a base in Sicily by American planes carrying weapons. Friction increased after the prime minister criticized Trump’s statements about Pope Leo XIV. A previous ally, Meloni now faces accusations of lacking “courage”.
