The club of Hollywood stars: Wrexham remains second class

Wrexham FC will also have to play in the second-tier championship in England next season. The Welsh club, which is in the spotlight thanks to its Hollywood owners, only managed a 2-2 draw at home against Middlesbrough FC on the last matchday. As seventh in the table, Wrexham missed the playoffs for promotion to the Premier League. Hull City moved past Wrexham into sixth place with a 2-1 win against Norwich City.

After Coventry City, Ipswich Town also secured a direct return to the top flight with a 3-0 win against Queens Park Rangers. Millwall, Southampton, Middlesbrough and Hull play in the playoffs.

Wrexham misses fourth promotion in a row

Since the takeover by Hollywood stars Ryan Reynolds and Rob Mac – formerly McElhenney – things have been going almost steadily for Wrexham. As the only professional football club on the island to date, it has been promoted three times in a row – from the fifth-tier National League to the Championship. This series is now broken.

The club’s sporting success is closely linked to the documentary series “Welcome to Wrexham”. Even before the takeover, Reynolds and Mac had the cameras rolling and documented everything. In Germany, the five seasons so far can be seen on the Disney+ streaming service.

Despite the sporting setback, Wrexham is already preparing for the Premier League and is making targeted investments in infrastructure. The stadium, the Racecourse Ground, which currently has 13,500 seats, is being expanded. The new grandstand should be ready by summer.
