Colonel General Petrov, the ex-head of the RKhBZ troops, was found dead in Moscow. Version: suicide

Retired Colonel General Stanislav Petrov, former chief of the Radiation, Chemical and Biological Defense Troops of the Russian Armed Forces, was found dead in Moscow.

According to RIA Novosti, Petrov’s body was discovered on May 2 by relatives in an apartment on Serafimovich Street. The preliminary version is suicide.

General Petrov was 87 years old. The funeral is scheduled for May 8.

Stanislav Petrov was born on April 3, 1939 in Gorky, now Nizhny Novgorod. Since 1956 he was in military service, in 1959 he graduated from the Saratov Military Chemical School, then served in chemical defense units in command positions. In 1966-1971 he studied at the Military Academy of Chemical Defense named after S.K. Tymoshenko, later – at the Military Academy of the General Staff. In the 1980s, he was the head of the chemical forces of the Siberian Military District and the Group of Soviet Forces in Germany, then the first deputy head of the chemical forces of the USSR Ministry of Defense.

In 1989-1992, Petrov was the last head of the chemical troops of the USSR Ministry of Defense, and after the collapse of the Soviet Union he became the first head of the NBC Defense Troops of the Russian Armed Forces and held this post until 2001. He participated in the liquidation of the consequences of the accident at the Chernobyl nuclear power plant, led work related to the destruction of chemical weapons within the framework of the federal program, had the rank of colonel general and was a laureate of the Lenin Prize in 1991.
