5 things to note when using a humidifier to reduce nasal congestion

Persistent nasal congestion may be related to colds, allergies, sinusitis or dry air. Humidifiers help add moisture to the air, help thin mucus, reduce dryness of the nasopharyngeal mucosa, thereby reducing nasal congestion and difficulty breathing.

Currently, there are many types of humidifiers, and choosing and using them properly can help limit dry air that irritates the respiratory tract.

Choose an appropriately sized humidifier

Do not choose a humidifier that is too large compared to the room area because water vapor can easily condense, creating conditions for bacteria and mold to grow. If there are small children in the house, do not place the machine close to the bed or crib, keep a distance of about 90 cm to ensure safety.

Place the humidifier in a well-ventilated area

Do not point the humidifier at curtains, beds or furniture because it can easily cause mold. If surfaces in the room are always damp to the touch, mold and bacteria can grow, affecting the respiratory tract. The machine should be placed in a well-ventilated place, high out of reach of children and away from electrical outlets.

Choose one with an automatic shut-off feature

The device automatically shuts off when water runs out to help avoid overheating and reduce the risk of fire. Some machines also have an automatic shutdown mode when the set humidity level is reached or after a certain time, limiting excessively humid air that causes discomfort and mold.

Use filtered or demineralized water

Moisture from the device helps thin mucus, helping to relieve nasal congestion. However, tap water can contain minerals and impurities that can easily create sediment or release small particles into the air. You should use filtered water, distilled water or demineralized water to limit the impact on the respiratory tract.

Clean the machine and do not leave standing water

You should unplug the power, empty the water tank and clean the device regularly to remove dirt, mold and bacteria. After cleaning, dry the parts before using again. If not used again, you should discard the remaining water in the tank to avoid microorganisms from growing and dispersing into the air when starting the machine. The device should be cleaned approximately every three days.
