Allowing users to choose between multiple third-party models is a major departure from Apple’s usual strategy of a tightly controlled user experience. Such an approach is more reminiscent of the functioning of Android and other more open operating systems than of the tightly guarded App Store ecosystem.

According to a recent report, these options come in the form of so-called Extensions and will be available this fall with the operating systems iOS 27, iPadOS 27, and macOS 27. The Extensions will offer a choice of AI models for writing, image generation, and even voice conversations. Instead of one assistant responding to each request, the system could direct queries to different service providers, depending on the user’s preferences. It’s all part of Apple’s broader plans for renewed AI features, which also include a number of new tools for the Photos app and a complete redesign of the Siri virtual assistant.

Platform strategy instead of product

This change comes after years in which Apple’s Siri, although a market pioneer introduced back in 2011, began to lag behind the competition. Google Assistant and Amazon’s Alexa have often been perceived as more capable in understanding context, primarily due to better integration with search engines. Apple’s strategy of opening the platform can therefore be seen as an acknowledgment that the race to develop basic AI models is extremely expensive and resource-intensive.

These partnerships would exist alongside Apple’s own models, which would further drive features built into the device itself. This plan implicitly acknowledges that no one company leads in every aspect of artificial intelligence. By allowing external models to plug into its ecosystem, Apple can offer more advanced AI tools without having to develop each one independently, an area where the company has struggled to keep up with the pace of its new partners.

What does this mean for users and partners?

This approach allows Apple to keep up with rapid developments throughout the industry while maintaining control over how these tools are presented. For partner companies, Apple’s ecosystem offers a reach that is hard to match with any other on the market. Even limited integration could bring a huge audience to alternative models, accelerating market competition.

Additional AI model selection options will probably appeal to those who want flexibility. On the other hand, some users love Apple precisely because the company promotes the idea that all its features are carefully selected so that the user automatically gets the best option. The new approach disrupts that simplified elegance, which for many is the key appeal of Apple’s operating systems.

ChatGPT loses its privileged position

It is important to note that Apple’s plan means that OpenAI, the ChatGPT system that currently serves as the primary external AI option for Apple devices, will lose its exclusive position. That exclusivity was extremely valuable for OpenAI, but the new strategy means that ChatGPT will become just one of many choices.

Of course, reduced control by Apple means that users can no longer assume that everything AI tools produce is approved by the company. Apple will need to make it clear that it is not responsible for content generated by third-party AI models, even while pointing users to compatible AI apps within the App Store. Many companies are following Apple’s design decisions, and this move suggests that at the current stage of AI development, power control is worth less than access. By turning its devices into a place where different models can coexist, Apple is betting that flexibility will be more valuable than exclusivity.
