Sun Group signed a strategic cooperation with GMR Group

Sun Group cooperates with GMR Group to develop non-aviation services, research new routes connecting Phu Quoc – India, promoting tourism and trade.

The signing ceremony of the memorandum of understanding (MoU) took place on May 7 in Mumbai, within the framework of the state visit of General Secretary and President To Lam and the high-ranking Vietnamese delegation in India.

According to the agreement, the two sides will cooperate to develop the airport ecosystem invested by Sun Group in Vietnam, including Phu Quoc, Van Don, Phan Thiet and future airport projects. The cooperation content focuses on operations, infrastructure development, non-aviation services, duty-free retail and commercial exploitation at the airport.

The two units also researched opening more routes connecting Phu Quoc with the airport network operated by GMR Group to promote tourism and trade between the two countries.

GMR Group has more than 20 years of experience developing aviation infrastructure, currently managing and operating many airports in India, Indonesia, the Philippines and Greece. Including Indira Gandhi International Airport in New Delhi, one of the busiest airports in the world. The total service capacity of the airports developed by this group reaches about 190 million passengers per year.

As for Sun Group, the unit is expanding its investment in the field of aviation infrastructure. The group took over the operation of Phu Quoc International Airport according to the “destination airport” model, and deployed civil aviation at Phan Thiet airport.

According to business representatives, cooperation with GMR Group is expected to contribute to improving operating standards, services and operational efficiency at airports invested by Sun Group, while increasing the competitiveness of Vietnamese aviation in the region.

Also within the framework of the event, Sun Phu Quoc Airways announced the authorization of Minar Group, an Indian travel business, to act as a general agent in this market. According to the airline’s representative, the cooperation aims to expand the distribution system and prepare for the plan to operate direct flights connecting Phu Quoc with destinations in India in 2026.

In 2025, bilateral trade turnover will reach 16.46 billion USD, nearly tripling compared to 2015. India is currently in the group of 10 largest trade partners of Vietnam. Two-way investment continues to expand with nearly 500 projects, and there is still much room for the two countries to continue to have breakthrough cooperation steps.

According to a Sun Group representative, the strategic partnership with India’s leading airline operator is expected to contribute to laying the foundation for deeper cultural, economic and tourism connections between Vietnam and India. Thereby, contributing to creating a new “path” for Vietnam in general and Phu Quoc in particular, to become attractive destinations, connecting the region.
