The sanctions that the EU will impose on some members of the settler movement who attack Palestinian communities in the West Bank constitute an “important step forward”. The Foreign Minister says so Antonio Tajaniin Brussels on the sidelines of the EU Council. “A situation has been unblocked – he states – which had been at a standstill for months. We have always encouraged Hungary to accept our proposals”.
“Now – he continues – the situation has been unblocked, so there will be sanctions for these violent settlers. Furthermore, there will also be sanctions for some representatives of Hamas. As regards the commercial aspects, possible commercial initiatives to sanction the most violent settlers through a customs block of their products, a proposal from the Commission is expected”.
In the Council “there was a debate. We will see what the Commission’s proposal will be, we will see if unanimity will be needed or if a qualified majority. No decision has been made, awaiting future proposals. For now, therefore, sanctions on violent settlers and sanctions on some representatives of Hamas. This is already a important step forward“, concludes Tajani.
