RallyOn Sunday, Janni Hussi took his first World Rally Championship victory as Teemu Suninen’s map reader in the WRC2 class.
Map reader Janni Hussi and rally driver Teemu Suninen won the WRC2 class competition of the World Rally Championship in Portugal.
The victory was the Finnish duo’s first joint victory and Huss’s first World Rally Championship victory.
The couple, who have been working together since February, drove a Toyota in physically demanding and varying conditions.
Huss’s goal in the future is to break into the highest WRC1 class.
”Yes here you have to digest a little more what really happened”, says the map reader Janni Hussi.
Hussi and rally driver Teemu Suninen won the WRC2 class race of the World Rally Championship in Portugal at the weekend.
It was the pair’s first victory achieved together and at the same time the first World Cup rally victory of Huss’ karting career.
“In the evening I was so tired, in overdrive and overexcited at the same time that I didn’t really understand anything. However, during the night I was able to reset my brain enough that in the morning I understood: that was the first one,” Hussi expressed on Monday.
After a tough, four-day start, there was hardly any energy left to celebrate.
“The party was so loud that we ate in the hotel lobby and went to bed.”
A lot of work hours and little sleep have accumulated, so this was the best possible reward.
Suninen and Hussi dominated Portugal’s unpredictable conditions.
Hussin in the bills, the victory becomes the biggest achievement of his career so far.
“A win is always a win, but yes, this feels especially good. A lot of working hours and little sleep have accumulated, so this was the best possible reward.”
The achievement is made even sweeter by the fact that, according to Huss, the World Rally Championship in Portugal is the most physically demanding race on the entire calendar.
“The conditions were really variable. It was slippery and there was a lot of mud. There were also rocks. The days were long, and so were the transitions. It was a really physical thing.”
The duo, who finished first in Delta Rally Team’s Toyota, have been working together since February. At that time, Hussi and Suninen participated together in the Swedish World Cup Rally, which was their first rally as a duo.
Hussi is very satisfied with the cooperation with Sunine.
“Teemu is a top-class driver who belongs to the very highest level of the series – at least in my opinion and certainly in the opinion of many others.”
“It’s easy to be in the same car with him.”
Hussi and Suninen cheered after the race.
Karttur’s with the aim of further breaking into the WRC1 class. Even at this stage, he cannot say when that might be possible.
“I will do my best for it, but quite a few pieces should fall into place.”
The next time Hussi will be seen in real action at the Japanese rally, where he works as a Japanese driver Takamoto Katsutan in the front car.
The World Rally Championship in Japan will be held from 28 to 31. May. However, before leaving for Japan, Hussi doesn’t really have time to rest, because other work beckons.
“Media-Janni is coming back, because the podcast studios are calling.”
“Let’s just say that there is still more to do than rallying. Even though I like my job and want to do it,” says Hussi.
