GTA 6 can be the best selling game ever and be in the red

The price of unprecedented ambition

While the budget of its predecessor, GTA 5, was around 265 million dollars, estimates for GTA 6 are moving to another dimension. According to some reports, the development and marketing budget is approaching two billion dollars, while other analyzes predict a final cost of four to five billion. Personnel costs alone at one of the key studios, Rockstar North, reportedly reached nearly three billion dollars. That’s the price of almost a decade of development and Rockstar’s dedication to detail.

How many copies are enough for a return on investment?

With such a huge stake, the key question is how many copies the game has to sell to cover costs. According to financial models, GTA 6 won’t make a cent of profit until it sells around 25 million copies. By comparison, Sony’s blockbuster Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 sold 11 million copies in its first few months. Investors’ expectations are therefore huge – anything below 20 million copies sold in the first few days will be considered a failure. At the same time, the retail price of 70 dollars does not go entirely to the publisher, because a significant part is taken by the various platforms that participated in the development.

Pressure on industry in uncertain times

The fate of the game depends not only on quality, butć and the global economy. In a time of rising costs of living, for many buyers the price of $70 for a video game is a luxury. A possible drop in sales during the crucial first weeks could have a negative impact on the shares of the publisher Take-Two, but also send a bad signal to the entire industry. If even the “golden hen” of gaming cannot meet expectations, investors could become more cautious. GTA 6 thus carries the burden of not only its own success, butć and perceptions of the stability of the entire market.
