At least five dead: shots fired at mosque in San Diego

San Diego (USA) – Hate crime at a mosque in San Diego: Shots were fired in the US west coast metropolis on Monday, leaving five dead. According to the FBI, three adult men were killed in the attack. According to authorities, the two suspected shooters are teenagers. They are also dead. According to initial reports, they are 17 and 19 years old. The motive is said to be hatred.

Witness heard 30 shots

The building complex in the Clairemont district, around 15 kilometers north of downtown San Diego, houses the region’s largest mosque and a school. According to its website, it is the largest mosque in the district of the same name. There were reportedly children in the facility at the time of the crime. There was a large contingent on aerial photographs police can be seen at the Islamic Center.

The attack caused shock among residents and relatives

An eyewitness told local TV station “KGTV” that he had heard around 30 shots. Helicopter footage showed officers in protective gear entering the building. It could also be seen how people were led away from the building under police protection, including many small children.

The surrounding streets and an adjacent highway were blocked by dozens of police vehicles. The police set up a meeting point for family members.

The website says the center’s goal is to not only serve the Muslim population but also “work with the broader community to help educate the disadvantaged and improve our country.” Five prayers take place in the mosque every day.
