After a serious illness: Mourning for the Austrian cycling legend

Wolfgang Steinmayr is dead. The former Professional cyclist and four-time winner the Austria tour died on Tuesday at the age of 81 after a serious illness.

Steinmayr was considered one of the most successful Austrian cyclists of the 1970s. With his four overall victories in the Tour of Austria, he set standards and continues to do so today Record winner.

At the Tour of Austria in 1972 and 1975 he was ““Grossglockner King”he was the first to cross the Großglockner on the stage. Steinmayr was considered an excellent mountain driver and was able to win the mountain classification in the Austrian state tour three times.

The trained chef was an amateur at the time, but often made the professionals look bad. The newspaper The Team once even named him for the best stage rider in the world and dedicated the front page to him.

“I really earned very well for the time and was able to build a great existence through sport,” he explained to the KURIER.

Olympian

He also represented Austria at the 1972 Olympic Games in Munich as well 1976 in Montréal.

After the end of his active career, Steinmayr remained a well-known personality outside of sports and was involved, among other things, in the insurance industry.

With Wolfgang Steinmayr, Austrian sport is losing a defining figure in domestic cycling.
