Lawn classic: Tennis star Alcaraz also cancels the start of Wimbledon

Alcaraz triumphed at Wimbledon in 2023 and 2024. Last season the Spaniard was only stopped by his rival Jannik Sinner in the final.

Zverev is a possible beneficiary of Alcaraz’s cancellation

The seven-time Grand Slam winner sustained the injury in Barcelona and ended the home tournament prematurely. He then had to cancel his starts at the Masters 1000 tournaments in Madrid and Rome as well as at the French Open. Now the grass classic in Wimbledon was canceled. Alcaraz was considered the top favorite for the tournament in London alongside the Italian world number one Sinner.

In the past two and a half years, Alcaraz was the only one who met the strong Italian on an equal footing. The beneficiary of his cancellation could be the top German player Alexander Zverev. The Hamburg native had already moved up to second place in the seeding list at the French Open in Paris, which began on Sunday, due to Alcaraz’s failure; Zverev can only meet Sinner in the final at the earliest. This could now also be the case at Wimbledon.
