A letter to reiterate the “new impetus” given to relations between Italy and India. The Prime Minister signed it Giorgia Meloni and the Prime Minister of India Narendra Modivisiting Italy. “The relationship between Italy and India has now reached a decisive phase. In recent years, our ties have expanded with unprecedented momentum, evolving from a cordial friendship to a special, strategic partnership, founded on the value of freedom and democracy as well as on a common vision of the future”, write Meloni and Modi, in the text published by ‘Corriere della Sera’.

Objective “synergy between Italian excellence and Indian growth”

“In a phase in which the international system is undergoing profound changes, the partnership between Italy and India is guided by frequent meetings at the highest political and institutional levels and is acquiring a new, higher dimension that combines our economic dynamism, the creativity of our societies and the wisdom of millenary civilizations”, underline Meloni and Modi. “Our cooperation reflects the shared awareness that prosperity and security in the 21st century will be determined by the ability of nations to innovate, manage energy transitions and strengthen their energy sovereignty – they add -. To this end we are committed to deepening and diversifying our bilateral relationship, with the aim of pursuing new goals and enhancing our complementary strengths. We aim to create a powerful synergy between Italian design, manufacturing excellence and world-class supercomputers – an expression of Italy’s position as an industrial power – and India’s rapid economic growth, engineering talent, manufacturing scale and its innovative entrepreneurial ecosystem of over 100 unicorns and 200,000 start-ups is not a simple integration, but a co-creation of value where their respective industrial strengths reinforce each other.”

 

 

The free trade agreement between the EU and India

“The free trade agreement between the European Union and India paves the way for an increase in investment trade in both directions. We want to reach exceeding the goal of 20 billion euros of trade between Italy and India by 2029 – I underline -, with particular attention to defense and aerospace, clean technologies, machinery, automotive components, chemicals, pharmaceuticals, textiles, agri-food, tourism and more”. “‘Made in Italy’ has always been synonymous with excellence in the world and today finds natural synergy with the high quality objectives of the ‘make in India’ initiative. In this context, the growing interest of Italian companies in producing for India and the increasingly significant presence of Indian industries in Italy – which today exceed 1000 on both sides – represent a positive signal that will strengthen the integration of our supply chains”. Among the central sectors of cooperation between Italy and India, Meloni and Modi cite “technological innovation, artificial intelligence, the space sector, defense, security and strategic technologies”.

Energy is a fundamental pillar of the partnership

“Energy represents another fundamental pillar of our partnership – they add -. The global transition to diversified energy sources requires innovation, investment and cooperation. Italy and India collaborate in areas ranging from renewable energy to hydrogen technologies, from smart grids to resilient infrastructure. India’s commitment to becoming a hub for the export of green hydrogen offers enormous potential and integrates perfectly with advanced Italian technologies in the renewable infrastructure sector with Italy’s strategic role as the energy gateway to Europe”.
