Hong Kong doctor helping people on plane causes fever on social networks

Hong Kong media reported on May 21 that on a recent flight of HK Express, departing from the city to Fukuoka, Japan, a middle-aged male passenger suddenly lost consciousness.

The crew immediately provided first aid to the passengers and issued a notice looking for medical experts on the flight to assist. Male doctor Ryan Cheung quickly helped.

Dr. Cheung’s timely intervention then attracted attention on Chinese social networks, not only because of his good deed but also because of his outstanding appearance. A passenger described Cheung on Xiaohongshu as “a very handsome man, over 1m85 tall”.

After Cheung’s image spread widely, many people identified him. According to information from local media, Cheung graduated from the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Hong Kong and worked at the emergency department of Queen Mary Hospital.

In addition to his medical career, Cheung is also a sports enthusiast. On his social networking site, he regularly updates photos of him practicing and playing the guitar. He once released self-composed music that attracted more than 700,000 listens and also regularly sang covers of some famous songs.

After receiving attention online, Cheung on May 21 spoke up about his sudden popularity in a Facebook post. “To all my new followers as well as those who have been with me since the beginning, from the bottom of my heart, I thank you for your support and (mostly) compliments. Honestly, the attention on social media makes me feel a bit overwhelmed,” he wrote.

“In the immediate future, I will continue to do my job well, strive to become the best doctor possible, compose the most realistic music, and dream of completing a series of weightlifting exercises without stopping as well as conquering the HYROX fitness race in under 60 minutes. Hopefully everyone will continue to accompany me on the upcoming journey,” he said, referring to the race combining 8 km of jogging and 8 functional exercises.
