‘El Gran Vázquez’ with Santiago Segura comes to FlixOlé within its collection dedicated to Spanish comics

The Great Vazquez’biopic about the Spanish cartoonist Manuel Vazquez starring Santiago Segurais now available on FlixOlé. Directed by Óscar Aibar, the film based on the play ‘The stories of Uncle Vázquez’ heads the new collection of the platform dedicated to spanish comic ‘From the comic to the screen’ with titles such as ‘The great adventure of Mortadelo and Filemón’ or ‘Mafalda’, among others.

The film starring Segura recreates late Franco Spain and the atmosphere of the Bruguera Studios. There the character of Segura coexists with other geniuses of graphic humor, such as Francisco Ibáñez, played by Manolo Solo. At the head of the publishing house are González, played by Enrique Villén, an upright man who protects those retaliated by Franco’s regime; and Peláez, played by Álex Angulo, a ruthless businessman who represents the darkest side of Bruguera.

Aibar’s past as a cartoonist was key for the director to bring this comedy with dramatic overtones to the big screen. The film places the action in 1968, the year in which ‘The Tales of Tío Vázquez’ was published, and constructs the portrait of the cartoonist based on testimonies from the author himself, his family and the legends of the comic world.

MANUEL VÁZQUEZ: A TALENT AS BRILLIANT AS IT IS CONTROVERSIAL

Born in Madrid but settled in Barcelona, ​​Vázquez, from Editorial Bruguera throughout the 50s and 60s, was the creator of essential comics such as ‘Anacleto: secret agent’, ‘The Gilda sisters’ or ‘The Cebolleta family’.

However, his controversial life was as well known as his creative talent. The author defrauded his employers, squatted his home and frequented hostess clubs while accumulating partners, children and debts.. In fact, the cartoonist was inspired by this way of life to create ‘The Tales of Uncle Vázquez’, one of his comics that dealt with the misadventures of a defaulter.

TITLES OF ‘FROM THE COMIC TO THE SCREEN’

Among the titles of ‘From Tebeo to the Screen’, a collection headed by ‘El Gran Vázquez’, stand out Mortadelo y Filemón, with the Estudio Vara serial Primer Festival de Mortadelo y Filemón (1969) and the film by Fesser ‘The great adventure of Mortadelo and Filemón’. Other productions such as ‘Mafalda (1982)’ or the two installments of Makinavaja starring Andrés Pajares and Jesús Bonilla are also available on FlixOlé.
