JOAN MANUEL SERRAT, HONOR AWARD
One of the most emotional moments of the gala took place with the presentation for the first time of the Honor Award, by direct designation of the Academy, to Joan Manuel Serrat.
The Catalan artist, who occupies an essential place in Spanish cultural history that encompasses author songs, poetry and social commitment, was grateful for this recognition, which he described as “a prize for survival.”
“At no point, when I started playing and writing songs, did I think that at this point I was going to find myself in a situation like this, with 60 years of experience and being able to decide when I would leave the stage to use that precious thing that is being alive,” he said.
Serrat has assured that the love of music “one does not know where it can come from.” “In my case I don’t have any family history. But I always remember my family singing, I sang with my mother,” he continued, pointing out that he learned “this craft from others, who in turn learned it from others.”
“And I fantasize that what I have done could be useful to someone to pass on this love and enthusiasm for music,” he concluded.
MUSICAL PERFORMANCES
Just before, Andrés Suárez, María Terremoto, Iván “Melon Lewis” and Antonio Serrano performed a medley of some of their most emblematic songs.
The musical performances have also marked other memorable moments of this edition, starting with a tribute to the recently deceased Robe Iniesta by Xoel López, Riqueni, Lela Soto and Walls.
Another great deceased figure of Spanish rock, Jorge Martínez of Ilegales, has also been remembered with the performance of Tiempos Nuevos, Tiempos Savages by Ultraligera and Juanma Montoya.
Other performances of the night included Amaral, Pedro Guerra performing his classic ‘Contaminame’ alongside Janus Lester, Tanxugueiras and Figa Flawas and Luz Casal as the grand closing of the gala.
PRESENTATION AND RED CARPET
The gala, presented by the singer and actress Leonor Watling, winner of the award for best jazz album for Leo&Leo, together with the musician Leo Sidran, brought together the main artists and personalities of the sector at Ifema.
More than 130 artists have walked along its great red carpet, including the nominees in the 43 categories of this edition, which have added a total of 218 nominations.
The welcome was given by the president of the Spanish Academy of Music, Sole Giménez, who highlighted the will with which these awards and the institution itself were born. “This academy was born with the clear intention of being the home of all music professionals, and today we are here feeling like a strong and united collective that with these awards we raise our voices to value Spanish music and to defend it as an essential part of our culture,” he stated.
