In view of increasing arrivals of migrants on Crete, the Greek government has announced a significant tightening of its migration policy. Migration Minister Thanos Plevris said in parliament on Friday that if the situation continued like the previous day with the arrival of more than 600 people in Crete, the government would take “very tough measures”.
Closed reception centers
Closed reception centers are planned in Chania and Heraklion, where migrants will be accommodated until their status is checked. With the new European Migration and Asylum Pact, which is due to apply from June 12th, a distinction should be made more quickly between those entitled to protection and people with no prospect of asylum. According to the government, procedures and possible deportations should be completed within a few weeks, Plevris added.
Remembering the refugee crisis of 2015/2016
Greece does not want to experience conditions like those in 2015 and 2016, said the migration minister. At that time, hundreds of thousands of migrants from Syria, Iraq and Afghanistan came to Europe via Turkey and the Balkan route. Now the pressure is increasing over the route from Libya to Crete. Most people currently come from Bangladesh and Egypt. There is no war there, so these are “clearly economic migrants,” the minister continued.
More crossings expected
According to information from Greek coast guard circles, dozens of boats from Libya are on their way to Crete. Plevris recently said that more than half a million people were waiting in Libya for a passage to Europe.
